Taconera Park
La Taconera is Pamplona's oldest park, of about 90,000 square metres, with a Versailles-inspired design. In 1678 it became a municipal park, and in 1830 the gardens were laid out in the French style. It spreads over former wall land, next to the Old Quarter, Ensanche I and San Juan, and preserves the Taconera gateway, demolished in 1905-1906 and rebuilt in 2002. Among its monuments are those of Julián Gayarre, Hilarión Eslava and Theobald I, the latter made with Gothic arches from the monastery of Santa María de Marcilla, and the statue of the Mari Blanca. Among its trees are beeches, magnolias, ginkgos, yews and sequoias. In the moats between the walls there is a small zoo with deer, ducks, rabbits and peacocks. Near the main pond, the municipal Nativity scene is set up every Christmas.
