The parish church of the Immaculate Conception stands in the La Muralla area, in the upper part of Mijas. Construction began in the second half of the 16th century and was completed in 1631. It has three naves and a chapel with a funerary crypt beneath it; another Baroque chapel, also with a crypt, was added later. Beside the church rises the 16th-century Torre de la Vela, which now serves as the bell tower and was built as a refuge for the townspeople in case of attack. During the 1992 restoration, paintings of the eight apostles, dated 1632, came to light on the columns. It sits right next to the walls' gardens and the bullring, so it fits well into a walk around the old town.
