Hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña
The hermitage is a chapel carved into the rock by a Carmelite monk in the mid-17th century, on the El Compás promenade, right beside the panoramic viewpoint of the same name. It holds the image of the Virgen de la Peña, patron saint of Mijas. According to tradition, the figure was found in 1586 by two shepherd boys whom a dove guided to the spot. As it is carved into the rock itself, the space is small and intimate, and access is directly from the promenade, with no ticket office. From the esplanade a wide view opens out over the Málaga coast. The hermitage is a few steps from Plaza de la Virgen de la Peña, where much of the old town is concentrated, and it is easy to combine with the viewpoint and the walk along the wall. Take it calmly: it is still a place of worship and people go in to pray at any hour.
