Church of San Francisco de Asís
Parish church in Tarifa's old town, next to Plaza del Ángel. There are records of the church from 1519, although its origin is placed in the 16th century. It suffered neglect and damage from the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and between 1794 and 1797 it was almost entirely rebuilt with Baroque and Neoclassical features. It has a rectangular plan with three aisles separated by square piers and semicircular arches; the central one has a barrel vault and ends in a semicircular apse. Above the side aisles there are galleries open to the main nave, from which services used to be followed. In the main chapel there are a choir and a circular 19th-century baldachin, whose dome, on Corinthian columns, shelters an Immaculate Conception carved in 1563. Among its images is the Santo Cristo del Consuelo, from the 16th century, one of the oldest pieces in Tarifa.
