Tarifa Point
Punta de Tarifa is the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula and of continental Europe, at the Atlantic entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. It lies at the south-eastern end of Isla de las Palomas, which used to be a separate island and is now joined to Tarifa by a causeway, the southernmost road in peninsular Spain. The area was a military installation from the 1930s until 2001. Its name comes from Tarif ibn Malik, the leader who began the Muslim conquest of the peninsula here in the year 711, and it has also been called Punta Marroquí because of the coast of Morocco that can be seen from there. The causeway can be walked freely on foot, but the interior of the island can only be visited in guided groups.
