The Atarazanas del Grao, in Valencian Drassanes del Grau, are a Gothic building from the late 14th century. Their origin lies in 1338, when the city's Consell decided to build a warehouse for oars, sails and other naval supplies. They functioned as a shipyard and as a place for repairing and storing ships and goods, and they recall the role of València's port in Mediterranean trade between the 14th and 16th centuries. The complex has five longitudinal naves with diaphragm arches and timber roofs with tiles of Arab heritage, and covers about 3,500 square metres. It has been a National Historic-Artistic Monument since 1949 and was restored in 1994. It stands in plaza Joan Antoni Benlliure, next to the church of Santa María del Mar. Today it is a municipal exhibition hall.
