Verónicas Market

The Verónicas Market is the main food market of Murcia, located on the Plano de San Francisco, next to the former Convento de Verónicas and near the Almudí Palace, the Paseo del Malecón and the Segura River. It occupies a sober modernist building designed by Pedro Cerdán and built between 1914 and 1922, with two floors and a mezzanine added in 1975. Inside, stalls are arranged selling meat, fish, delicatessen, salted goods and fresh produce from the Murcia market gardens; the meat and fish vendors are on the lower floor and the fruit and vegetable vendors on the upper floor, accessible by escalators. Visitors can buy regional products and enjoy them at the market's bars and small canteens, especially on Saturdays. It also has a gastronomic classroom where cooking classes are held almost daily for groups arranged through the City Council. Next to the market a stretch of the Arab wall and outer wall survives, with two towers, one of them almost intact and incorporated into the Iglesia de Verónicas.
