Church of San Agustín
This is the church of the former convent of San Agustín, on Calle Rosario. Work began in 1617 and finished thirty years later, in 1647, the year of its Mannerist marble doorway. Of the convent, the old cloister, some rooms and the chapel survive; the large cloister, next to the church, belonged for years to a secondary school. Inside, the neoclassical high altarpiece stands out, designed by the architect Pedro Ángel Albizu, with 17th-century images and paintings by Domingo Álvarez. The church houses the Santísimo Cristo de la Buena Muerte, which some authors attribute to Martínez Montañés and others to Alonso Cano, and the Cristo de la Humildad y Paciencia, a work by Jacinto Pimentel. On the pendentives are the coats of arms of Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa, Álava and Navarre. On Good Friday the procession of the Cristo de la Buena Muerte leaves this church.
