Church of the Rosary

CultureVisit: ~30 minOpening hours: Lunes, jueves, viernes y sábado de 11 a 13 h y de 18 a 20 h; martes de 10 a 13 h

The church grew out of a 16th-century chapel built as the seat of a community of Augustinian nuns. Since the first half of the 17th century it has housed the confraternity of the Virgen del Rosario of the Black community, from which it takes its name. After several renovations, its current appearance is academic, from the late 18th century, the work of Torcuato Benjumeda. It has a Latin cross plan with three naves, and the main one is divided into four bays separated by Doric piers. The façade is of Genoese marble, from the early 18th century, with four Ionic pilasters and a central attic topped by a triangular pediment with the Virgen del Rosario, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Inside, the highlights are the high altarpiece with the Virgen del Rosario flanked by Saint Servandus and Saint Germanus, two paintings by Juan de Herrera and the Crucifijo de las Misericordias. It is on Calle Rosario, next to Plaza de San Francisco.
