Calahorra Tower
A fortress of Islamic origin that defends the southern end of the Roman Bridge, across the Guadalquivir from the Mosque-Cathedral. The first reference dates from 1236, when the troops of Ferdinand III conquered Córdoba. In the 14th century, after winning the throne, Henry II enlarged it with a moat and a second tower joined to the original by a drawbridge; a coat of arms of Castile and León from that period can still be seen. A third tower and some gun ports for firearms were added later, and in 1514 Joanna I ordered a barbican that gave it almost its present appearance. It was a prison for nobles, a girls' school from 1863 and a Civil Guard barracks. Since 1987 it has housed the Living Museum of al-Andalus, an audiovisual museum with eight rooms on the Córdoba of the 9th to 13th centuries and the coexistence of Christians, Jews and Muslims. From the terrace you can see the historic centre, a World Heritage Site.
