Baths of the Caliphal Alcázar
The Baths of the Caliphal Alcázar are a 10th-century hammam, built under Caliph Al-Hakam II next to the vanished Umayyad alcázar. The Almoravids and Almohads reused it between the 11th and 13th centuries. Its remains came to light by chance in 1903 in the Campo Santo de los Mártires and were covered over again a few months later. Between 1961 and 1964 a group of Córdoba historians excavated them. Today you can see a series of rooms with ashlar walls covered by vaults with star-shaped skylights. The vaults rest on horseshoe arches supported by columns with marble capitals. The plasterwork with ataurique decoration and inscribed bands is kept in the Archaeological Museum. The baths are in Plaza del Campo Santo de los Mártires, opposite the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos.
