A Neo-Gothic wrought-iron city lift opened in 1902, designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard. It is about 45 metres tall and links Rua de Santa Justa, in the Baixa, with Largo do Carmo, in the Chiado. From the upper platform there are views of the Baixa, the castle, the Rossio and the ruins of the Convento do Carmo.
