A great square open to the Tagus, on the site of the former royal palace (Terreiro do Paço), destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and rebuilt afterwards under the impetus of the Marquis of Pombal. It is surrounded by yellow arcaded buildings and in the centre stands the equestrian statue of Joseph I, the work of Machado de Castro. To the north, the Rua Augusta Arch leads into the Baixa.
