Maruyama Park
Maruyama Park extends behind Yasaka Shrine, in Higashiyama, and is considered the oldest park in Kyoto. To the north it borders Chion-in temple and it is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty. Its main entrance is at Yasaka Shrine, at the end of Shijō Street. At its centre grows a large weeping cherry, the Gion no Yozakura, which is lit up at night in spring; the current tree was planted in 1949 and is of the second generation. In spring it is one of the places in Kyoto where hanami is most celebrated. The park also has a pond with a path around it and a statue of Sakamoto Ryōma beside Nakaoka Shintarō, two anti-shogunate activists murdered in Kyoto in 1867.
