Historic district in eastern Kyoto, known for its wooden machiya houses and for being the main geisha district, where they are called geiko, and of their apprentices, the maiko. Hanamikoji Street preserves teahouses (ochaya) and restaurants with traditional façades. A short distance away runs the Shirakawa canal, lined with willows and cherry trees. Gion extends east of the Kamo River, next to Yasaka Shrine.
