Yasaka Shrine
CultureVisit: ~45 min
Shinto shrine at the eastern end of Shijō Street, between the Gion district and Maruyama Park. Its festival, the Gion Matsuri in July, is one of the most important in Japan. Hundreds of paper lanterns bearing the names of businesses and sponsors hang in the grounds, and they light up at night. Its main gate, vermilion in colour, is one of the symbols of Gion and is open at all hours.
