Plaza Mayor
A 17th-century arcaded square built by Juan Gómez de Mora and rebuilt by Juan de Villanueva after the fire of 1790. It has been the setting for bullfights, autos-da-fé, coronations and markets. At its centre stands the equestrian statue of Philip III, and on its north side the Casa de la Panadería stands out for its mural paintings. Nine arches connect it with the Madrid de los Austrias, among them the Arco de Cuchilleros.
