The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) is the leading museum dedicated to collecting and exhibiting modern Japanese art. Its collection spans works by Japanese artists from the Meiji period onward, including both Western-style and Nihonga artists, and includes around 8,000 ukiyo-e prints from the Matsukata Collection. It was Japan's first national art museum, established in 1952, and is now located in Kitanomaru Park, Chiyoda. The main building was designed by architect Kunio Maekawa and later extended and redesigned by Yoshirō Taniguchi. The museum also housed the National Film Center until 2018 and had a crafts gallery that moved to Kanazawa in 2020.
