National Theatre of Japan
The National Theatre of Japan is a complex of three halls in two buildings located in Hayabusa-cho, Chiyoda, Tokyo. It is run by the Japan Arts Council and is devoted mainly to traditional Japanese performing arts. The main hall (Large Theatre) stages kabuki, buyō and other plays; the Small Hall specialises in bunraku, Japanese music, gagaku, shōmyō and folk theatre; and in a separate building, the Engei Hall presents rakugo and manzai. Every April the theatre hosts the Japan Prize award ceremony. The theatre has been closed since the end of October 2023 for a reconstruction project, so no visits or performances are currently documented.
