Museum Island

Museum Island is a group of museums on the northern half of the Spreeinsel, in central Berlin. It houses five internationally renowned museums: the Altes Museum (Old Museum), the Neues Museum (New Museum), the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum. These buildings, constructed between 1830 and 1930, trace the evolution of museum architecture and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Together they allow visitors to explore European art from antiquity to the 19th century. Highlights include the bust of Nefertiti in the Neues Museum, and the Pergamon Altar, the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and the Market Gate of Miletus in the Pergamon Museum. Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten park are also located on the island. The James-Simon-Galerie, opened in 2019, serves as a visitor centre and is connected to several museums by an underground passage.
