The Old National Gallery Berlin (Alte Nationalgalerie) is a museum on Museum Island holding an outstanding collection of 19th-century art. The building, constructed between 1862 and 1876 to plans by Friedrich August Stüler and Johann Heinrich Strack, combines neoclassical and neo-Renaissance styles and is topped by an equestrian statue of Frederick William IV. Inside, visitors can explore rooms dedicated to Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier, French Impressionism and early modernism. Highlights include 'The Monk by the Sea' by Caspar David Friedrich, 'The Iron Rolling Mill' by Adolph von Menzel and the 'Princesses Group' by Johann Gottfried Schadow. The museum has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and is an essential stop for lovers of 19th-century art.
