The Old Royal Palace is the wing of Prague Castle where the rulers of Bohemia lived and where their state ceremonies were held. Its main feature is the Vladislav Hall, one of the great secular halls of the European late Gothic: it was built by Benedikt Ried at the end of the 15th century for Vladislaus II Jagiellon and measures 62 metres long, 15 wide and 13 high. Banquets, markets and even jousting tournaments were held in it, which is why it has the so-called Riders' Staircase, a wide, gentle ramp up which horses could climb. The rooms of the Bohemian Chancellery open off the hall. From one of their windows, on 23 May 1618, two imperial governors and their secretary were thrown out, the second Defenestration of Prague, which sparked the Thirty Years' War. All three survived the fall. The palace is in the third courtyard of the complex, in Hradčany.
