Cathedral of the Holy Resurrection

The Cathedral of the Holy Resurrection, known as Nikolai-do, is the main cathedral of the Orthodox Church in Japan, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo. It was founded by Archbishop Nicholas Kasatkin, who chose the site on Kanda Surugadai hill, which overlooked the Imperial Palace. The building was designed by Josiah Conder and built by Nagasato Taisuke, completed on 8 March 1891. Its Byzantine architecture and the sound of its bell featured in the literature and illustrations of the time. After the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, which brought down the bell tower above the dome, it was rebuilt under the direction of Okada Shinichiro and reconsecrated on 15 December 1929, with a lower tower and a less ornate interior. In 1962 it was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It remains an active place of worship and a venue for events of the Japanese Orthodox Church, such as the 2026 national gathering '通常公会'.
