Staatsoper Unter den Linden
The Staatsoper Unter den Linden is a listed opera house on the Unter den Linden boulevard, in Berlin's historic centre, built between 1741 and 1743 on the orders of Frederick the Great to plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in the Palladian style. It was the first theatre conceived as a monumental free-standing building in a city and is considered the oldest state opera house in the world. Its company has maintained a cooperation of more than 250 years with the Staatskapelle Berlin and has been led by figures such as Meyerbeer, Mendelssohn, Richard Strauss, Furtwängler, Klemperer, Karajan and Daniel Barenboim; it premiered works such as Alban Berg's Wozzeck (1925) and Nicolai's Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (1849). After the 1945 bombing raids only the main façade on Unter den Linden survived; the building was rebuilt between 1951 and 1955 and renovated between 2010 and 2017, with a hall seating 1,350. Visitors can attend operas and ballets such as Rigoletto, Samson et Dalila, L'elisir d'amore, La Vestale and Giselle, symphonic concerts by the Staatskapelle Berlin, guided tours of the building, dance workshops and the Apollo-Salon matinee series. Tickets for Rigoletto are advertised from €10 to €100.
