Bebelplatz
Bebelplatz is a public square in central Berlin, on the Unter den Linden boulevard. It is surrounded by historic 18th-century buildings: the Staatsoper Unter den Linden to the east, St. Hedwig's Cathedral to the south and Humboldt University to the west. The square is known for having been the site of the Nazi book burning on 10 May 1933, when around 20,000 books were burned. Set into the ground is a memorial, 'The Empty Library', by Micha Ullman, consisting of a glass panel through which empty underground bookshelves can be seen. There is also a plaque bearing a quotation from Heinrich Heine. Every year, Humboldt University students hold a book fair on the anniversary of the burning.
