Admiralty Arch
Admiralty Arch is a large structure combining a triumphal arch and an office building, designed by Aston Webb and finished in 1912. Its arcade connects The Mall with Trafalgar Square: the side arches are open to pedestrians and vehicles, while the central one stays closed with a gate reserved for the royal family for ceremonies. At the top runs a Latin inscription dedicated by Edward VII to his mother, Queen Victoria, and at the ends of the wings stand the figures of Navigation and Gunnery, by Thomas Brock; outside there is also a statue of Captain James Cook. On the inner wall of the northernmost arch, about two metres up, hides a small human nose placed by the artist Rick Buckley in 1997. The building is Grade I listed and is being converted into a luxury hotel.
