Théâtre des Célestins
The Théâtre des Célestins is on the Place des Célestins, on the Presqu'île, at 4 rue Charles Dullin. The name comes from the Celestine convent, which occupied the site from 1407; before that there was a Templar commandery until the early 14th century. It is an Italian-style theatre that has put on drama continuously for more than two centuries. After a fire in 1871, the architect Gaspard André won the competition for its reconstruction and the theatre opened in 1877; another fire devastated it in 1880 and it was rebuilt identically, reopening in 1881. It was restored in 2005. The great auditorium in red and gold, the audience foyer with its rich decoration and the painted ceiling are the highlights. Guided tours take in the auditorium, the artists' foyer and the backstage areas.
