Plaza de la Merced

Plaza de la Merced is one of the main squares in Málaga's historic centre, in the district of the same name. It regularly hosts events and festivals and is a popular gathering place, especially in the evenings. It contains the obelisk monument to General Torrijos, a neoclassical monument from 1842 designed by Rafael Mitjana commemorating Torrijos and his 48 companions executed by firing squad in 1831; a crypt holding their remains lies at its base. There is also a seated bronze statue of Picasso, installed in 2008, the work of Francisco López Hernández. The square is also home to Picasso's birthplace (numbers 15-20, Casas de Campos), headquarters of the Picasso Foundation Birthplace Museum. The square is lined by notable buildings, including numbers 9 and 10, the oldest, with 18th-century façades, and number 12, from 1883, with a glazed gallery on the top floor. The square was remodelled in 1857, 1988 and 2011, retaining its 19th-century appearance.
