Church of Santiago
The Church of Santiago Apóstol, on Calle Granada in the historic centre, is the oldest parish in Málaga: the Catholic Monarchs founded it on 25 July 1490 on the site of a mosque, shortly after the conquest of the city. Of the original façade, the Mudéjar portal, now bricked up, and the brick tower with sebka decoration survive. The interior, with three naves, combines Gothic vaults at the east end with a Baroque dome added in the 18th century over the main chapel. Among the images are carvings attributed to Pedro de Mena. At the church's baptismal font Pablo Picasso was baptised on 10 November 1881, as were his sisters Lola and Conchita and, earlier, his paternal grandparents when they married in 1820. The church was closed for restoration work between 2016 and 2017.
