Pont Neuf
The Puente Nuevo, also known as the Iron Bridge, is a metal structure with parabolic girders over the Segura River, completed in 1903. It was designed by the engineer José María Ortiz and built by the Barcelona firm Materiales para Ferrocarriles y Construcciones. It originally had a central span of 46.80 metres and eight access spans of 11.25 metres, but the river's canalisation in the 1950s removed the access spans, leaving only the central span with its parabolic girders. In 2001 it was closed to traffic for structural reasons and restored by Javier Manterola, reopening in 2003 as a pedestrian-only bridge. Today it allows visitors to cross the Segura on foot and admire up close its historic iron structure, set within Murcia's urban landscape.
