Ponte Santa Trinita
Renaissance bridge over the Arno made up of three shallow elliptical arches, 29 metres at the sides and 32 in the centre, considered the oldest elliptical arch bridge in the world. It was designed by Bartolomeo Ammanati and built between 1567 and 1569 at a point where Florence had had bridges since the 13th century. In 1608 four statues of the seasons were added: Spring by Pietro Francavilla, Summer and Autumn by Giovanni Caccini and Winter by Taddeo Landini. Destroyed by German troops in August 1944, it was rebuilt in 1958 with original stones recovered from the river or from the same quarry in the Boboli Garden; Spring's lost head was recovered from the Arno riverbed in 1961.
