Ponte Vecchio
A medieval bridge over the Arno, rebuilt in 1345 after the flood of 1333. Its shops hanging over the river housed butchers until in 1593 Grand Duke Ferdinando I reserved them for jewellers and goldsmiths, a trade they still keep. Above runs the Vasari Corridor, built in 1565 to link the Palazzo Vecchio with the Palazzo Pitti. It was the only bridge in Florence to survive the destruction of 1944.
