Church of San Lesmes Abad
A 14th-century Gothic church in Plaza de San Juan, on the edge of the old town and on the route of the Camino de Santiago through the city. It was built after John I of Castile ordered the demolition in 1383 of the hermitage of San Juan, set against the wall, where San Lesmes lay, an 11th-century French monk who looked after pilgrims and is the patron saint of Burgos. His alabaster tomb, with the saint's image carved on the lid, is in the central part of the church, near the altar. The exterior is sober, with the doorway, the rose window and the bell tower as its only adornments; the west façade was restored between 2012 and 2013. Inside, the highlights are a stone pulpit considered the finest in the city, a Plateresque choir beside the altar, several altarpieces and a small parish museum. Entry is free, but opening depends on services. It is a Bien de Interés Cultural and stands next to the former monastery of San Juan, now the Marceliano Santa María Museum.
