Teatro Principal
An Isabelline-style theatre on Paseo del Espolón, opposite the palace of the Provincial Council. Work began in 1843 to a design by the architect Bernardino Martínez de Velasco and under the direction of Francisco de Angoitia, and dragged on through lack of funds and disputes until its inauguration on 4 April 1858. It was conceived as a multi-purpose space, and also served for cinema and other civic uses. It closed in 1946, was declared in ruins in 1975 and was restored between 1995 and 1997 under the direction of the architect José María Pérez González, Peridis, until its reopening on 7 July 1997. It is a declared monument and Site of Cultural Interest. Its main auditorium opens off a spacious foyer, with five levels and a capacity for about 1,200 spectators. The complex also includes the Sala Polisón, the Salón Rojo, a library and an exhibition hall. Today it programmes theatre, dance, opera, zarzuela and concerts, and is home to the Burgos Symphony Orchestra.
