Monte Coronado is a limestone and sedimentary hill about 220 metres high, whose summit forms a rocky plateau that, seen from the surroundings, resembles a crown, now shaped more like a crescent moon due to limestone quarrying. From the summit there are broad views over the bay and the city of Málaga, especially on clear summer days. On the southeastern slope is a prehistoric settlement dating from the transition between the Neolithic and the Chalcolithic, and there are also remains of a Nasrid-era farmstead (almunia) in the lower area. The hill was used as a quarry for building Málaga Cathedral, which has altered its original outline.
