Rathaus Schöneberg

The Rathaus Schöneberg is a sandstone building constructed between 1911 and 1914 to the design of architects Peter Jürgensen and Jürgen Bachmann. It was the town hall of the independent city of Schöneberg until it was incorporated into Berlin in 1920. After the Second World War, in which it was badly damaged, it became the seat of the West Berlin senate (1949–1990) and of the governing mayor (1949–1991). In its square, now John-F.-Kennedy-Platz, US President John F. Kennedy gave his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech on 26 June 1963. The rebuilt tower was fitted in 1950 with the Freedom Bell (Freiheitsglocke), a gift from the United States. Inside, a commemorative plaque and the room above the entrance are dedicated to Kennedy. Since 2005, the exhibition hall has hosted the show 'Wir waren Nachbarn – Biografien jüdischer Zeitzeugen' ('We Were Neighbours – Biographies of Jewish Contemporary Witnesses'), about Jews from Schöneberg and Tempelhof under the Nazi regime. It previously housed a permanent exhibition on the life of Willy Brandt, which closed in January 2010 with plans to reopen elsewhere. The building continues to serve as the town hall of the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district.
