Grand Trianon
The Grand Trianon is a French Baroque-style palace within the grounds of Versailles, built in 1687 on the orders of Louis XIV as a private retreat away from the court, with a pink marble exterior that gives it its distinctive name. Visitors tour an architectural complex made up of a large courtyard of honour, two wings linked by a colonnaded gallery called the peristyle, and formal French gardens decorated with pools such as the Bassin Plat-fond and the Bassin du Fer-à-Cheval. The interior is notable for its pink Languedoc marble columns and Carrara marble capitals, as well as a gallery connecting the main buildings and offering views of the gardens. Throughout its history, the Grand Trianon has served as a place of rest and residence for figures such as Louis XIV, Peter the Great and Napoleon, and it is now part of the National Museum of the Palaces of Versailles and Trianon.
