The Queen's Hamlet
The Queen's Hamlet, next to the Petit Trianon at Versailles, was conceived by Marie Antoinette as a private retreat where she could escape court life and enjoy quiet walks or intimate gatherings with those close to her. The complex is arranged around a central pond and has twelve half-timbered cottages inspired by Norman and Flemish architecture, including a working farm, a tower called Marlborough, a decorative mill, a dovecote, a barn, a dairy and the Queen's House, which stands out at the centre of the hamlet. Each building is surrounded by kitchen gardens, orchards or flower gardens, and the farm still keeps animals, now managed by an animal welfare foundation. Visitors can explore this space, which combines rustic and picturesque elements, taking in both the agricultural areas and the residences that, after several restorations, retain the bucolic atmosphere and original layout designed by Richard Mique.
