Episcopal Palace of Murcia
The Episcopal Palace of Murcia is a historic 18th-century building in the old town, the official seat of the Diocese of Cartagena and a Site of Cultural Interest since 1992. Its architecture is a fine example of the Rococo style, square in plan, with Italian and French influences. The main façade, which faces Plaza de Belluga next to the cathedral, has Ionic pilasters flanking the entrance arch, crowned by a large balcony decorated with the coat of arms of Bishop Rojas y Contreras. Inside, the courtyard has two storeys: the first with round arches between Tuscan pilasters and the second with Ionic pilasters supporting balconies decorated with medallions of bishops and a Rococo frieze. The main staircase, leading to the first floor, holds portraits of all the bishops of the Diocese of Cartagena since its founding. The chapel, circular in plan with Corinthian pilasters and a Rococo cornice, was inaugurated on 18 February 1774. The rear façade, facing the Segura River, includes the so-called Martillo, a viewpoint over the river and an architectural closure to the Paseo del Arenal (now La Glorieta).
