Major Seminary of San Fulgencio
The Seminary of San Fulgencio was founded on 19 August 1592 by Bishop Sancho Dávila Toledo. The building seen today dates from the 18th century and was finished during the episcopate of Diego de Rojas y Contreras, between 1753 and 1772, with Pedro Pagán as architect, the same one who worked on the Bishop's Palace. It is in the old town, between Plaza de Belluga and Calle Apóstoles, opposite the Cathedral, and forms a Baroque ensemble with the former College of Theologians of San Isidoro, the Ecclesiastical Prison and the Bishop's Palace. The main façade is of stone, on three levels of decreasing width, with Doric pilasters, a balcony with the coats of arms of Murcia and of the bishop, and a niche with the image of San Fulgencio. The doorway already points towards Neoclassicism. The rear façade, of exposed brick, faces Paseo del Teniente Flomesta and the River Segura. After an interior refurbishment in 1993 it keeps its façades, entrance, main corridor and the former chapel; today it is occupied by the Higher School of Dramatic Art and Dance.
