Madrid's cathedral was begun in 1883 and not consecrated until 1993, during a visit by Pope John Paul II. Its exterior is neoclassical, matching the Royal Palace opposite; inside it is neo-Gothic, with brightly painted ceilings and modern stained-glass windows. In the neo-Romanesque crypt, with more than 400 columns, and from the dome, visitors can go up to a viewpoint with views over the palace and Casa de Campo.
