Park Güell
Park Güell covers the slope of the Turó del Carmel, in the district of Gràcia. The industrialist Eusebi Güell commissioned Antoni Gaudí to design a residential estate inspired by English garden cities; it was built between 1900 and 1914 with the collaboration of Josep Maria Jujol and Francesc Berenguer, and only two of the roughly sixty planned houses were built. One was the house where Gaudí lived from 1906, now the Casa Museu Gaudí. It opened as a public park in 1926. Highlights include the entrance pavilions with hyperbolic paraboloid vaults and trencadís, the hypostyle hall with 86 columns, Jujol's undulating bench on the upper square, the mosaic dragon fountain and the Three Crosses calvary at the summit, with views over the city. It is part of the 1984 UNESCO listing of Gaudí's works.
