A Manueline monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome, whose construction began in 1501 under the reign of Manuel I in the Belém district. Highlights include the south portal, the church of Santa Maria with its branching columns and the two-storey, richly decorated cloister. In the church are the tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1983.
