CultureVisit: ~45 min
A Manueline fortification built between 1514 and 1520 to a design by Francisco de Arruda to defend the entrance to the port of Lisbon from the Tagus. Its four-storey tower combines defensive elements with seafaring-inspired decoration, such as stone ropes and armillary spheres. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1983 and stands on the riverbank, in the Belém district.
