A public aquarium opened in 1998 during Expo 98, in the Parque das Nações. Its great central tank, holding five million litres, simulates an open ocean and can be seen from two levels. It is home to thousands of animals from every ocean, such as sharks, rays or mantas. It is one of the largest aquariums in Europe and was designed by the architect Peter Chermayeff.
