The Gdansk Shakespeare Theatre, Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski, opened in 2014 on the site of an old 17th-century theatre where English companies performed. The building, by the Italian architect Renato Rizzi, is of dark brick and has a retractable roof that allows open-air performances. Every summer it hosts the Gdansk Shakespeare Festival.
