Kapalıçarşı, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, whose core began to be built around 1455 under Mehmed II. It is a maze of more than sixty streets with hundreds of shops selling ceramics, carpets, lamps, jewellery and leather, beneath painted vaults. It is in the Beyazıt district, near the Nuruosmaniye Mosque, and usually closes on Sundays.
