A Carthusian monastery on a hill in the Fuentes Blancas park, about three kilometres from the centre of Burgos. It was founded by John II of Castile around 1441-1442 on the site of a hunting lodge belonging to his father, Henry III. The first building burned down in 1454 and another was raised, pushed forward from 1477 by Isabella the Catholic; the church was almost finished around 1488. It is a Gothic church that works as a royal pantheon: in the middle of the nave, the alabaster tomb of John II and Isabella of Portugal, by Gil de Siloé, is shaped like an eight-pointed star and bears the recumbent statues of the monarchs. The high altarpiece, also carved by Gil de Siloé and polychromed by Diego de la Cruz between 1496 and 1499, is regarded as one of the great works of Spanish Gothic sculpture. The Carthusian community still lives on the premises.
