Church of Santa María la Real y Antigua
A 14th-century Gothic church in the Gamonal district, beside the Camino de Santiago, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1931. Its origin is linked to the appearance of an image of the Virgin on this site, and the earliest records date from the 11th century, when Alfonso VI moved the episcopal see here from Oca; from that period only a Romanesque capital found in the vaults survives. The plan is a Latin cross, with a single nave and transept, quadripartite vaults and a straight apse with a sexpartite vault, following the model of Burgos Cathedral. A porch opens at the west end and a large bell tower rises beside it. The decoration is notable for the Calvary and the Jacobean iconography, and for the 15th-century Mudéjar door. A 16th-century stone cross, which stood in the vanished cemetery, was moved to nearby gardens.
