Tokyo Mosque
Tokyo Mosque, also known as Tokyo Camii, is the largest mosque in Japan and is located in the Ōyama-chō area of Shibuya. The current building, completed in 2000, was designed by Hilmi Şenalp in Ottoman style, with a main dome 23.25 metres high supported by six pillars and an adjoining minaret 41.48 metres tall. White and turquoise predominate inside and out; the minbar and mihrab are covered in white marble with gold detailing. The mosque has a ground floor and three storeys above it: the first floor is a common area and the second houses the prayer hall. A Turkish cultural centre operates alongside it. The original building dates from 1938, built by Bashkir and Tatar immigrants, and was demolished in 1986 due to structural damage; the reconstruction was supported by Turkey's Directorate of Religious Affairs and around 70 Turkish craftsmen who carried out the final details, using marble imported from Turkey.
